Snow Day Learning Activities

Hannah Smith - Thursday, March 01, 2018

As school is closed today it would be great if children could complete the following activities.

This week in maths we have be learning about addition. If  you have your mathletics password please use the mathletics website to complete addition activities. Additionally  create a list of your own calculations and solve them using the pictorial method using tens and ones.  E.g.  10 + 2 =  14 + 5 =. You could even try writing them in the snow!

Whilst outside playing in the snow can you write numbers from 1-100? How many numbers can you write before they disappear? How many snowballs can you make and count? Can you make footprints and count in twos?  We would love too see any photographs of snow day learning.

As it is world book day why not snuggle up and read your favourite book. We would love for you to write a book review to tell us about your favourite book . If you plan on staying indoors today why not set yourself a challenge to see how many books you can read throughout the day.

To celebrate World Book Day we would love for you to create and design your own story character. Think about their appearance, their personality and what adventures they might go on. The more imaginative and creative the better! You could create your own Ice Queen, Snowman or Weather Wizard. We would love to see stories, cartoon strips or character descriptions that you write about your character.

Here are a list of websites that you might wish to use today to support learning at home.

Have a fun and safe day in the snow.

Blast Off!

Emma Brameld - Wednesday, January 10, 2018

What a busy term we had in year 1 during the lead up to Christmas. First of all we would like to thank all families who attended the Christmas Nativity, the children love to see so many smiley faces and they really do value your continued support.

During the autumn term we have really enjoyed writing letters and post cards to our favourite authors, famous celebrities and to our family and friends.

We have spent a lot of time reading and learning about different books written by the famous author Julie Donaldson. One of our favourite stories that she has written is the Gruffalo. We read the story and added actions before writing our own Gruffalo stories. We used interesting adjectives to describe the Gruffalo and the different story characters.

We used a variety of different materials and media to create our very own Gruffalo masks and we even had a visit from the Gruffalo himself! He really wasn’t that scary!

This term we will be blasting off into Space! We are very excited to learn all about the different planets in our Solar System and learn all about the lives of astronauts out in space. We will spend time researching facts about the planets and learn songs and rhymes to help us remember the order of the planets from the sun.

We have an exciting visit from Polestar Planetarium on Monday 29th January where the children will get to experience what it is like out in space. We are very excited!

In maths we will continue to practise reading and writing numbers up to 100. We will be learning how to partition numbers and understand the value that each digit holds. We will be adding and subtracting numbers up to 100 and learning all about 2D and 3D shapes.

Autumn 2

Emma Brameld - Monday, November 20, 2017

Wow! What an exciting first half term we had in Year One. We began our year by going on an imaginary visit to the seaside. We travelled by bus, played in the sand, rode a donkey and ate delicious ice cream. What an adventure it was!

We then investigated the different countries in the United Kingdom. We spent time researching facts about London and read all about the Loch Ness monster in Scotland. We’ve loved reading a book called ‘There’s no such thing as Nessie’ and retelling and writing our own version of the story. The idea of a monster living beneath the water in Loch Ness provoked lots of discussion on the subject. Some of us believe in the Loch Ness monster but some of us don’t. Do you believe in Nessie?

In maths, we have learnt how to count forwards and backwards to and from 100. We can now read and recognise single digit and two digit numbers. We have practised adding a single digit to a two digit number using practical objects or using a pictorial representation. We enjoyed exploring the outdoor environment and comparing objects by length. We can now describe an object as the shortest or longest and order up to five objects by size.

This half term we will be learning all about the famous children’s author Julia Donaldson and studying some of the fantastic books she has written including ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘Room On The Broom’ and ‘Stickman’. We will find out all about Julia Donaldson’s life and what inspired her to write children’s books. We will have the opportunity to act out some of her famous stories, retell and sequence stories, invent our own story characters and write our very own story. We can’t wait!

In maths we will begin to count in multiples of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We will learn how to subtract a smaller number from a larger number using practical objects and pictorial representation. We will begin to name and describe the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes and learn how to measure the weight of objects. We have a visit planned to Totley Farm on the 28th November. During this visit children will learn the Christmas story and have the opportunity to act out and perform their own Christmas nativity. We are very excited about our visit!

Welcome to Year 1

Ecclesfield Teachers - Friday, September 08, 2017

Hello from the Year 1 team. We are Miss Doman, Miss Garner, Mrs Hurst, Mrs Clift and Mr Cowen. Keep checking the blog for news and exciting activities happening in Year 1!

We hope that you have all had a great summer! We are excited to kick off the new school year and to get to know you all. We have got some fun and exciting learning for you all in the first half term.

This half term's topic is called 'Where will the magic key take us today?'

We will be going on lots of different adventures and learning about different places in the United Kingdom, starting our journey at the seaside. We will be reading lots of Biff and Chip's magic key books!

In numeracy, we will start the year by learning the numbers 1-100. Children will be learning to recognise patterns in the 100 square, (e.g. 23, 33, 43) and match numerals to words (e.g. 6 and six). Learning will be fun and practical.

During the forthcoming weeks, we will be sending out reading diaries with new books. Can you please ensure that you will read with your child at least 3 times per week at home and this is written in your child's diary. If you have any questions or queries, please come and ask anyone in the Year 1 team!

See you soon!!
