Year 6's Diary

For those of you that don’t know the team in Y6, we have the class teachers Mrs Hill, Mr Steel and Mrs Hancox plus our teaching assistants Mrs Shepherd and Mrs Revitt. As we enter the new year we are building up to the SATS in May whilst continuing to explore themes from around the world in our varied topic lessons.

Welcome to Year 6!

Ecclesfield Teachers - Thursday, July 27, 2017

Have you ever wondered how a new continent was founded? How did the people get there? What happened to make them move?

Well, all of these questions will be answered in out first topic of the year 'New Discoveries'. We will investigate the lives of the settlers who moved to America, the troubles they faced with the Plains Indians and how they eventually prospered in the west. The Geography of North America is also quite varied, our year group will discover the mountains, rivers and volcanoes across the continent.

New discoveries will not stop in out topic lessons! In science our classes will look into the classification of animals and plants. What makes a bird a bird and how can you tell a lizard from a frog? We will also discover microbes and bacteria and how these can keep us same but at the same time can be harmful.

In Literacy we will be reading Stormbreaker by Anthony Horrowitz as our class book. This book will link to stories and descriptions we will be writing. As well as these we will write biographies and newspaper articles linked to North American Indians. In maths, we'll start off looking at the place value of numbers as well as looking at the four operations. These will then be used to solve longer 1 and 2-step word problems.

In September we will also be going on our residential visit to Thornbridge Outdoors. Please come prepared in September with any questions you may have. Have an exciting summer, but please remember to use Mathletics and RM Maths to practice your maths and importantly your times tables. Don't forget to read at least one book that you can share with us in when we return in year 6.
