Reception is an exciting year where children learn, explore and grow through a balance of play, adult-led activities and hands-on experiences. Our curriculum is based on the EYFS Development Matters guidance, with the aim of helping children achieve the national  ‘Early Learning Goal’ by the end of the year.

 

English: 
Our children are encouraged to develop a love of books to become confident, enthusiastic readers and writers. Our learning is almost always centred around stories, examples of these include: Elmer, We’re going on a bear hunt, Jack and the beanstalk, Dogger, Kipper’s birthday and many more! Over the year we place a strong focus on developing early literacy skills. We learn Phase 2 and Phase 3 phonics which helps to boost our children’s confidence when reading and writing words and simple sentences.

 

In Reception, our children develop their early mathematical understanding through practical, hands-on experiences and purposeful play. We explore concepts such as number, counting, comparing quantities, as well as shape, space and measure. Throughout the year our children are encouraged to solve problems, explain their thinking and use mathematical language in their everyday learning.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development:
Developing confident, happy and independent children is an important part of life in Reception, and we understand the importance of working together with parents to support the children to develop their independence, resilience, confidence skills. Throughout the year children learn to build positive relationships, understand and manage their emotions, take turns, share and work cooperatively with others.

Throughout our year together, children explore a range of fascinating topics and experiences. These include learning about family history, celebrations, the Arctic, old toys, minibeasts and plants. We encourage children to ask questions, investigate the world around them and make connections between their own experiences and the wider world.

Reception is a special year filled with curiosity, creativity and discovery. Helping every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need as they begin their school journey. Together we build the foundations needed for a successful journey through Ecclesfield Primary School.
