Autumn 2 in Y1

Wednesday 28 Oct 2020 13:02pm

Hello everybody,

We hope that you are all well and have enjoyed a much-needed Half Term break.

We wanted to take this opportunity to say a big well done to every single child in Year 1 for settling back into school so well and a big thank you to every parent for your continued support in these ever-changing times.

We have had a fantastic half term of learning; the children have been exploring the theme of Houses and Homes through the text of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One of our favourite moments of the half term was making porridge for Goldilocks and then writing instructions for her to make it herself.

Each day we will have 2 phonics lessons where we will be focussing on revising Phase 3 sounds and learning Phase 5 sounds. This will then support our reading comprehension lessons in which we will explore a variety of text types and genres. We will be immersing the children in one high quality text; discussing the background knowledge needed to access the text, clarifying vocabulary within the text and building up skills needed to answer questions about the text.

This half term our core texts is the story of The Three Little Pigs. As in our reading lessons, we will immerse the children in the story and use that as a springboard for writing. Our grammar focus will be writing five star sentences; these consist of a capital letter, a full stop and finger spaces. We will also be focussing on the spelling of High Frequency Words and the children’s spelling test will aid with this.

In Maths, we will be exploring addition and subtraction within 10 before moving on to place value within 20. We will be using concrete and pictorial representations to support the children’s learning at each level. The children will be learning the disciplinary knowledge and will then be given opportunity at every level to reason and problem solve; thus deepening their understanding.

We will continue to be doing PE on Mondays and Wednesdays so please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school on those days.

As a Year One team, we have been so impressed with the commitment to homework from both parents and children. We are continuing to ask that you read with your child each evening. Books need to be brought in on a Thursday and your child will be sent home with a new book on a Monday. We will also be continuing to send spellings of High Frequency Words sent home on a Friday to learn for the following week. Your child’s class teacher will be in touch in the next few weeks regarding maths homework so please keep your eyes peeled for further information.

We really appreciate your continued support of your child’s learning.

Many thanks,

The Year One team
