Welcome to Year 1 - September 2020

Welcome to Year 1! We hope that you have settled into school well.

A big hello from your Year 1 teachers who are Mrs Stott, Mrs Oldham, Miss Grayson and Mrs Coleman. We are all so impressed with how you have settled into Year One, especially because some of you have been away from school for such a long time.

This half term we will be focussing on reading, writing and maths. We know that some of you have been away from school for a really long time so we have made lots of time within our timetable to revise all of the fabulous learning that you did in Foundation Stage.

Each day we will have 2 phonics lessons where we will be focussing on Phase 3 and 5 sounds. This will then support our reading lessons in which we will explore a variety of text types and genres. We will be engaging with one text over a five day period so that we are immersed in the text, discuss the background knowledge needed to access the text and clarify vocabulary within the text.

One of our core texts for Year 1 is the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In our writing lessons we will be learning the story, innovating a character similar to Goldilocks and inventing a new story. Our grammar focus will be writing five star sentences; these consist of a capital letter, a full stop and finger spaces. We hope to publish the children’s final piece on the website, so keep your eyes peeled!

In Maths, we will be exploring place value and number. Initially, we will focus on number within 10 before moving on to look at the place value of numbers up to 20. The children will be learning the disciplinary knowledge and will then be given opportunity at every level to reason and problem solve; thus deepening their understanding.

We will be doing PE on Mondays and Wednesdays so please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school on those days.

As a Year One team, we would really appreciate it if you could read with your child each evening. Books need to be brought in on a Thursday and your child will be sent home with a new book on a Monday. Dojo points will be awarded if your child reads at home every night.

We really appreciate your support of your child’s learning and we look forward to all that this year holds.

Many thanks,

The Year One team
