Summer 2 in Year 6

Sunday 12 Jun 2022 19:32pm

Hi everyone and welcome back!

Well done for a great half term Y6! We can’t wait to carry on with some exciting new learning this half term too!

This term we will be starting our new class book, Journey to Jo’burg – Beverly Naidoo. This fantastic book will continue to help the children develop their reading and writing skills. We will start our learning by looking at some factual background information to help us understand the context of our class story, which will aid our reading lessons where we will investigate the characters. We will continue to answer different types of reading questions including retrieval, inference, summarising, sequencing and so on.

You can further your children’s reading learning at home by ensuring that when they are reading, they are doing so with intonation and fluency. To support their comprehension, try to ask them questions about what it is they have just read.

In our writing lessons this term we are going to focus on writing for different purposes. We will start with a newspaper report on the incident at Tacoma bridge, this will allow us to put emphasis on writing to inform the reader. Our newspaper report will provide important information for the reader as well as aiming to engage and entertain them.

Our Maths learning this term will focus on problem solving. This means we will be exploring the best and most efficient ways to calculate or solve problems that can be applied to real life settings. These multi-step questions will allow the children to consolidate their Y6 learning effectively.

Throughout our final term in Y6, we will be working on an end of year performance called ‘Dragon Days.’ The children have wowed us with some amazing auditions and have been given their parts. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help the children with learning their lines and becoming familiar with the songs so that we can put on a fantastic show!

Again, just like last half term, there are many ways to help your child at home. It is so important for your child to read 4 times a week for a minimum of 20 minutes each time! Timestable Rockstars and Freckle are great – they will help your child consolidate learning that they have done in school. Also, each week on google classrooms, we will continue to set homework.
